History : Department of Guidance & Counselling

HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME/SUB-DISCIPLINE

The Department of Guidance and Counseling was carved out from the former Department and Institute of Education, in 1976. It offers undergraduate programmes in Guidance and Counseling as well as postgraduate programmes at the Masters and Doctoral levels in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology, Psychology of Learning, Tests and Measurements, Developmental Psychology and Personnel Psychology. The Department also runs a professional master's programme in Personnel Psychology.

The Department therefore, prepares graduates for the schools, for industries, for commerce and for other social institutions where counseling and other applied psychological skills could be of use. In addition, the Department also runs a Psychology Clinic which offers treatment for a wide range of children, adolescent, and adult problems.

The Department has developed a number of psychological tests which are widely used in Nigeria and in other African countries. Its publication, besides numerous journal articles include learning kits and manuals and cognitive stimulation materials for African children.
