History : Department of Teacher Education.

Historical Background

The Department is the living heritage of the former Department and Institute of Education. Since it came into being in 1975, the Department of Teacher Education has focused on the preparation of professionally qualified educators for all levels of education in Nigeria and other countries. Therefore, available areas of studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (including postgraduate diploma full time) include Educational Foundation (comprising of Comparative Education, History and Policy of Education, Philosophy of Education and Sociology of Education) and Pre-Primary/Primary (Early Childhood) Education. The Department also offers courses in Curriculum Studies (made up of Language Education, Science and Mathematics Education, Social Studies Education and Curriculum and Instruction). In addition, there is the Educational Technology Unit, set up to update the Department’s professional resources in line with the expectations of our era of information Technology. The Department also serves the entire Faculty of Education as the base for the conduct of professional teaching practice. At the sub-degree level, the Department now offers part-time diploma courses in language education, Pre-Primary/Primary (Early Childhood) Education, Educational Technology. In partnership with the Institute of Education, the Department offers the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (part-time). It also organizes conferences and workshops for educational practitioners at all levels of education (including ministerial) within the country and internationally.
