History : Department of Social Work


The Department has its roots in the University of Ibadan and Pennsylvania link programme which started as far back as 1975. The efforts and contribution of Professor L. P. Shoemaker, Dean of the School of Social Work, University of Pennsylvania from 1973 to 1985, Professor J. T. Okedara, Head of Department of Adult Education, University of Ibadan for several years and Dr. J. O. Ojesina led to the development of the pioneer curriculum for the professional master’s programme in social work in Ibadan. However, some Departments like Psychology, Preventive and Social Medicine, Psychiatric unit of the College of Medicine, Guidance and Counselling, Special Education all contributed to the development of the curriculum.

In September 1999, the Master of Social Work programme which started as a unit in the Department of Adult Education in 1990/1991 academic session became a full-fledged department whereby all the courses taken outside the department were adjusted and modified appropriately as approved by the University Senate.
